Visitors from all parts of the world come to the Hawaiian Islands will hold dear their purchase of their purchase of something they wore. Hawaiian, Polynesian, Island tropical Hawaiian and Aloha style clothing hold fond memories after they return to home. Visitor's commonly save their money for years to have enough funds to afford their travel to these Hawaiian islands for a vacation for a week or two stay. These floral, tropical prints, made by a half dozen or so manufacturers remaining in Hawaii, are constantly creating new prints. This has been going for the last six or seven decades. Some of these prints have become collectables. There are books written about the Hawaiian shirt and Polynesian clothing. Many of today's new prints will become collectibles. EBay has dozens of listings. Many men collect Hawaiian shirts. Many women admire their Hawaiian print dresses for many years. These Polynesian and Hawaiian prints are collectable. People treat their Hawaiian prints just as coins or stamps or anything else people assimilate for a hobby or collection. An interesting difference between most collectible objects is that the clothing they bought and have worn while on vacation have a link to their memories of the vacation trip. The Hawaiian shirt and dress bring forth the sights and sounds they encountered. The walk down Front Street in Lahaina, Maui, the shopping at the many tourists shops in Waikiki. The scuba dive, the snorkeling adventures, the whale watch, the sailing trip, the sandy beaches and warm waters and the aroma of the Plumeria. These sights and sounds are indelible memories for life. The Luau where they were entertained by the Hula show and the feast they partook off. These are images not soon forgotten. The simple bathing suit cover up; the sarong, the memorable trips to the hundreds of sights not found anywhere in the world are taken back to their homes. Many of our T-Shirts and clothing depict these Hawaiian island landmarks.
I've had conversations with men that relate how proud that they have over 50 or more shirts in their closet. Each shirt has a story and a memory for them. I've met couples that pride themselves on having over a dozen or more matching outfits of a women's dress and a man's shirt. Dozens of entire families wear matching prints for luau parties, birthdays and weddings and gatherings of all kinds. Hundreds of company and corporate events, business identities are just a few uses of the Hawaiian shirt and/or dress.
MauiShirts prides itself on keeping this archive of all sold out prints. The images on these two museum pages are for your enjoyment.

Few things say more about Hawai'i than the aloha shirt. Tourists see them as exotic souvenirs, but for locals, they serve as a uniform for the tropical soul, an expressive symbol that says the wearer has embraced the casual pace of Island living. Consider this: Hawai'i is the only state in the nation where the traditional uniform of business - the suit and power tie - is regularly scrapped in favor of loose-fitting aloha shirts. One could even argue that the Mainland practice of "Casual or Aloha Fridays" has its origins in the aloha shirt. In 1966, the Chamber of Commerce of Hawai'i created Aloha Fridays so that government employees who dressed according to Mainland fashion could wear aloha shirts instead. When the first aloha shirts appeared is not clear, but many feel they gained their initial widespread popularity in the 1930's.
Businessmen Ellery J. Chun registered the trade name "aloha" shirt in 1936. Chun ran a store, and he and his sister designed short-sleeved shirts out of leftover kimono material. Chun placed the shirts in the window of his store with a sign that said, "Aloha Shirts". The shirts quickly caught the eye of local residents, including surfers and beach boys who entertained tourists in Waikiki. Then as now, wearers loved their loose-fitting cut and their brightly colored patterns. And their designs were a visual treat, filled with flowers, pineapples, palm trees, surfers, hula dancers - any image that could create a dreamy, romantic image of the islands.
